West London Churches Homeless Concern  West London Churches winter night shelter project provides 35 emergency bed spaces every night in 7 different West London Churches between the cold months of November and April. An hot evening meal and breakfast is also provided free of charge. A Casework service is also available offering advice, advocacy and practical support. Throughout the year, laundry, clothing and washing facilities are on offer at the project headquarters on the King's Road. The Soup Kitchen  The Soup Kitchen is a resource for the homeless, marginally homeless, impoverished and lonely in Central London. Run from the American Church at Tottenham Court Road and open 5 days a week, they serve substantial balanced meals, free of charge, to an average of 60 people each day; distribute clothes and toiletries, also free of charge; offer a small open studio art project and a modest advisory service. A StreetSmart grant would be used to help with general running costs of the project. Amongst other programmes, they run a Specialist Outreach Service for homeless clients who cannot engage with mainstream services. A key tool to engagement is the offer of a hot drink or healthy snack. The StreetSmart grant will be used to fund this meal allowance. West London Day Centre (WL Methodist Mission)  West London Day Centre, based in Marylebone, supports 1600 homeless individuals each year. The Centre offers a drop-in, meeting basic needs for food, clothing, showers, laundry and medical care. It also provides specialist support in areas such as mental health, substance misuse, benefits, rehousing, tenancy sustainment and job and craft skills. A StreetSmart grant would be used to fund either the Canteen or the Advice Centre. Services are provided free of charge and include the provision of clothing, laundry, hot food, showers and emergency accommodation. In addition, longer term accommodation is available for 112 residents. They also operate a drop-in centre, which provides advice, health services, training and education to around 500 homeless women a year. A StreetSmart grant would be used to help fund the emergency bed unit. 999 Club 999 Club offers comfort, respite, advice and guidance to the most isolated, excluded and lonely people in society - those who are homeless, or at risk of being homeless. The 2,500 people that use the Club face a multiplicity of problems - addiction, mental illness, ex-offenders, victims of crime and abuse, elderly and neglected and vulnerable children. There are three centres in three of the most deprived neighbourhoods in the London Borough of Lewisham - Deptford, Downham and New Cross. A StreetSmart grant will help towards the salary of a trained advocacy worker who can help people gain temporary accommodation, housing and benefits. Nearly 2000 homeless people use the Shepherds Bush centre and it is anticipated that up to 400 people will benefit from the new Resource Centre. The aim of the Centre is to enable adults to overcome their difficulties, regain their self-esteem and take responsibility for their lives by providing opportunities for development through advice, information, counselling, training and education. StreetSmart funding will be put towards the salary of the catering assistant. The kitchen project provides two low cost, hot meals daily. They are offered help in accessing vital services such as welfare benefits, housing, immigration, health services, education and interpreting for those with little and no English. This is mainly achieved through drop-in centre sessions, but also through outreach. A StreetSmart grant would be used to maintain the advocacy and advice services offered. They operate twice a week from a Church Hall in Stoke Newington. On average 80 people a week take advantage of a hot meal, a welfare, housing and advice service, a clothing store, haircuts and showers, literacy and numeracy classes. A StreetSmart grant would be used to fund the cost of the centre manager. They are open 363 days a year for basic services - day-time shelter, hot lunch, clothing and companionship. Services focused on longer-term solutions include housing and benefits advice, mental health support, resettlement, primary healthcare clinics, drug and alcohol support and work with vulnerable women. Other activities include a variety of adult learning and life skills courses. The funds donated would be used for general running costs of the centre. The rehabilitation hostel has 16 beds for homeless alcoholic men over the age of 25. The drop-in service provides homeless and isolated members of the local community with a small, but friendly source of help, advice and support. The hostel has been in operation for 16 years and, in this time, has helped over 240 young women to turn their lives around. During their stay, all residents are encouraged to pursue educational courses, life skills training and, where applicable, are helped to find employment. A StreetSmart grant would be used to purchase much needed computer equipment for the hostel.
