You can always tell you are in Newcastle because the people there smile at you and are genuinely friendly! Folks look out for one another up in the North East, restaurants and diners raised the grand sum of £8,500 for local homeless charities in 2006. We anticipate a generous response to this year's StreetSmart campaign too, so make sure you're part of it.

How's that for a
real happy meal
By Louella Houldcroft
Part of the StreetSmart 2002 event, customers of 19 participating restaurants
across the region were asked to think of those less fortunate than themselves,
and add £1 to their final bill.
Every penny donated went directly to charity, thanks to the support of
Barclays Bank, and yesterday StreetSmart revealed that the final tally was £13,708.
Terry Laybourne, who headed up the 2002 North-East initiative and is the
proprietor at the region's Cafe 21 restaurants, said there had been a great response.
"From our point of view, it was not only good to be giving something back
to the community, it was also a very simple scheme to adminster," he said.
"The majority of our customers were happy to contribute and I would certainly
be looking to take part again next year. I just hope we get even more support
from the local restaurants." |
