StreetSmart - helping the homeless £500,000 raised in November and December 2006 Supported by Deutsche Bank.

London
Londoners love to eat out and it seems they don't leave their consciences at the door – the capital raised an impressive £353,000 in 2006. It may seem a huge total to overhaul this year but with a population of seven million, restaurants of every size and cuisine and around 30,000 homeless households, it's definitely worth a try.

I realise that there are many calls on restaurateurs to help the hungry and distressed, but what persuades me every year to ask you to support StreetSmart is the very particular benefit the simple two-month long scheme brings to our great city of London.

Because the sponsors - Deutsche Bank cover all administrative costs, every penny raised through a StreetSmart £1 addition to a customer's bill in November and December goes towards helping the homeless, luckless, dispossessed and marginalised. Last year the 250 London restaurants that took part in the scheme raised over £350,000. This sum helped to fund 43 important and often life-saving London projects. If this year the total collected could approach half a million pounds, it would be truly wonderful.

The scheme is simplicity itself to administer and, in my experience, those who eat out during the festive months, often celebrating their own good fortune, find the modest £1 donation a painless way to give a helping hand. If life in the streets is improved, it impinges beneficially on everyone.

I know that when I am out reviewing restaurants for the Evening Standard, I am always pleased to see the StreetSmart card on the table. Please do join in - or please stay in if you are already a kind supporter.

Yours sincerely,
