I realise that there are many calls on restaurateurs to help the hungry and distressed, but what persuades me every year to ask you to support StreetSmart is the very particular benefit the simple two-month long scheme brings to our great city of Brighton and Hove.
Because the sponsors - Deutsche Bank - cover all administrative costs, every penny raised through a StreetSmart £1 addition to a customer’s bill in November and December goes towards helping the homeless, luckless, dispossessed and marginalised.
In the six years that StreetSmart has been running in our city, the scheme has raised over £60,000. Last year, the 22 Brighton and Hove restaurants that took part raised £16,000 - up from £9,000 the previous year. This sum helped to fund 12 important and even life-saving city projects. The amount was divided between Stopover, Women’s Refuge Project, Fareshare, Clock Tower Sanctuary, Halo, Crossover, Brighton Housing Trust, EMMAUS, Foyer, Young Person’s Centre, Hove YMCA and Brighton Voices in Exile. It would be wonderful if this year the total collected could top £18,000.
The scheme is simplicity itself to administer and, in my experience, those who eat out during the festive months, often celebrating their own good fortune, find the modest £1 donation a painless way to give a helping hand. If life in the streets is improved, it impinges beneficially on everyone.
I know that when my team are out reviewing restaurants for The Argus, we are always pleased to see the StreetSmart card on the table. Please do join in - or please stay in if you are already one of our excellent supporters.
Yours sincerely,
